ISLAMABAD – Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Tuesday expressed concern over the thrashing of three television journalists by security guards at the Judicial Complex.
Afzal Butt, President Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) who later met Sharif at the Punjab House, informed him about the incident.
Butt told Sharif that on the occasion of his appearance before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Dunya TV reporter Aamir Saeed Abbasi, Shah Khalid Hamdani of 92 News and Neo TV’s Saad bin Altaf were beaten up.
Abbasi was hit with a pistol butt on his head and fainted. The guards also snatched the journalists’ cell phones.
Sharif directed State Minister for Interior, Talal Chaudhry to ensure that such incidents do not happen again and to work out a plan in cooperation with all stakeholders for coverage of NAB proceedings.
The ex-prime minister also assured action against those who thrashed the journalists.
Soon after the incident, Butt and the President of the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ), Mubarak Zeb Khan visited the Ramna Police Station to submit applications against the violent guards. Journalists Abbasi and Khalid were also present at the police station.
