Cricket without process: Inside Pakistan's selection catastrophe

There is a moment in every era when the illusions of grandeur come crashing down. For Pakistan cricket, that moment arrived when Aaqib Javed’s spectral elevation to power culminated in an unholy mix of chaos, egotism, and rank incompetence.

To Jason Gillespie, a coach with international pedigree and method, Aaqib was a cunning conspirator, a man winding intrigues behind the scenes to secure absolute control. To Pakistan cricket, however, he has been an insult to rational decision-making, a paradoxical man caught between his insecurities and his desperate grasp at authority.

When Aaqib inherited the reins of the selection committee and, by extension, the national team, he walked into a garden long overgrown, wild, tangled, and faintly resentful of anyone imprudent and thoughtless to try pruning it back into order. It was a cricketing ecosystem that had for years survived on accidents rather than intentions, yet here was Aaqib, entrusted with the delicate task of reintegration, basting, darned back what had frayed not just at the edges, but at the very seams.

But instead of wisdom, there was whimsy. Instead of process, there was theatre. And instead of a clear-eyed vision, there was the soft haze of political survival, the kind that blurs the line between pragmatism and self-delusion. His squad announcement for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 felt less like a plan and more like a confession, conveyed through the cracks: a solitary specialist spinner, a lone specialized opener, both left stranded like cryptic clues in someone else’s unfinished puzzle.

It would be too simple, too easy, to say Aaqib does not understand modern cricket. That cannot be the case. The man, in another life, was a portrait of clarity, cricket-savvy, experimental, self-assured to the point of self-absorption. He understood cricket’s dynamics, even if he sometimes ignored its syntax. And yet, the Aaqib who now presides is a man wrestling with ghosts, lurching between recklessness and justification with a fervour that borders on the absurd. His defences, when they come, are delivered with such mind-bending conviction that they seem less like explanations and more like provocations, daring the world to disagree.

The solitary opener, poor soul, is not a player so much as punctuation, a comma forced into a sentence that no longer knows where it’s going, or even where it began. A man plucked not from the team’s future but from the wasteland of its past, offered up not as a solution, but as evidence of how far they’ve drifted from the very idea of coherence.

The Unforgivable Betrayal of Fakhar Zaman

And then, there was Fakhar Zaman. Pakistan’s sole genuine white-ball match-winner, a man who had whittled four centuries in 2023, found himself cast into exile. Not for cricketing reasons, but because he dared to call a spade a spade. The PCB’s bureaucracy, obsessed with its fragile egos, saw fit to systematically dismantle his career. He was omitted from key tours to Zimbabwe, Australia, and South Africa and denied a central contract on October 27, 2024, an institutional snub meant to humiliate. He was issued a show-cause notice, an act of petty vindictiveness disguised as discipline, having tweeted one for Babar Azam against his axing.

This was not about enforcing standards. It was about settling scores. And in the process, the national cause was ruthlessly undermined.

Fakhar’s absence left a void, but it was Sam Ayub who rose to fill it, only for fate to intervene with an ankle injury. Thoughtlessness reigned supreme: Fakhar had been the only true opener in the squad, yet Babar Azam was inexplicably displaced from number three, where he had amassed 19 centuries at an average of 60.14, second-best in the world, at a time when he desperately needed stability.

Here was Babar, a generational talent, already struggling under relentless scrutiny, thrust into an unfamiliar role. The PCB’s decisions placed him on the precipice of elimination, a once unshakable figure now standing at the edge of elimination.

A Selection Circus: Politics Over Process

If selection was an art, Aaqib Javed turned it into a grotesque performance of indifference, incompetence, and invisible pressures. Five of his handpicked players were outside the PCB central contracts, which had been finalized after the last domestic List A tournament had ended. What did that say about the selectors? That they were either woefully shortsighted, or they had been pressured from above, from political or influential realms, forces unseen but deeply felt.

Consider the Contradictions

Saud Shakeel and Usman Khan, both tethered to the central contract like reluctant heirs to a crumbling estate, spent months watching from the periphery, unmoved, untouched, unseen as Pakistan toured Zimbabwe, Australia, and South Africa without so much as a passing glance in their direction. They existed in that peculiar limbo so beloved by Pakistani selectors, neither discarded nor desired in One Day Internationals, a name on a list rather than a plan in motion. And then, without reason, they were summoned, parachuted into a team they were never meant to inhabit.

Usman’s selection was the kind that provokes silence rather than scrutiny, a player so accidental that the team itself seemed to shrink from him, tucking him into the margins rather than laying him bare to the rigours of trial. Even when Fakhar Zaman faltered and space opened up, it was not Usman who was called into the light, but Imam-ul-Haq, a batsman already banished on twin charges, both familiar and uniquely Pakistani. First, for whispering too much of the dressing room’s secrets into media ears, and second, for a strike rate that belonged to a gentler, slower era, one that modern Pakistan cricket had spent years trying to disown, which ironically never did.

And so it was, another selection not of solutions, but of echoes. Another step not forward, but back into the very confusion from which they had once sworn to emerge. The reinforcement of failure, in Pakistan cricket, is not so much a flaw as it is a philosophy, a way of being passed down like heirloom uncertainty, if it was ever understood at all.

Aamer Jamal, a PCB investment, was discarded, while Rana Fahim Ashraf and Khushdil Shah, products of franchise cricket performances, were made to skydive into the squad. Aaqib dared to claim Khushdil Shah was a replacement for Sam Ayub. Usman Khan’s selection reeked of political interference or someone’s personal bias and ego, his UAE nationality conveniently dropped just before his inclusion. But reality spoke louder than reputation, his PSL heroics and the local T20 record (five centuries, strike rate 145.48) had crumbled in international cricket (average 15.46, strike rate 122.75), confirming he hadn’t been able to equate himself to international cricket’s rigors. He seemed irrelevant to international cricket.

The Saud Shakeel Paradox and the Disastrous Handling of Fast Bowlers

Saud Shakeel’s role was a study in confusion and contradiction. Drafted to reinforce the middle order for his prowess against spin and ability to rotate strike, he was instead shuffled up and down the order. When Fakhar fell to injury, Saud was inexplicably asked to open despite carrying Usman Khan, a specialist opener but not competent enough to be entrusted with the job, undermining logic.

If he wasn’t required to play, why was he still the part. Displaced, Saud couldn’t turn deed into dexterity though he came up with a half-century against India. Consequently, he was dropped from the New Zealand-bound squad. He had initially been chosen to reinforce the middle-order, to rotate the strike and largely due to his extreme competence against quality spinners. None of that. He was compelled to bat up in the order, even as an opener. Yet, his reward? 

Aaqib’s mishandling extended beyond batsmen to Pakistan’s once-proud fast bowling battery. He boasted Pakistan had the best fast bowlers ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, only to then drop both Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf from the ODI squad for the tour of New Zealand. In T20s, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, despite their established roles (Babar’s last-year strike rate: 138.16), were axed in what can only be described as scapegoating of the highest order or to satisfy the popular narrative, the people having turned against them.

Ironically, the same Aaqib Javed had taken Ahmad Danial, Qasim Akram, Faisal Akram, and Arafat Minhas to Zimbabwe and Australia, yet none of them were selected for the final squads, even after overhauling the T 20 International team. They were bypassed and another crop of youngsters was drafted in. Continuity is one word dishearteningly absent from Pakistan cricket’s functioning.

The Captaincy Farce: A Tale of Panic and Backtracking

If ever there was an episode that laid bare the PCB’s fragility, it was the captaincy debacle. Rashid Latif, the ex-Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper in advance mentioned the squads picked for the New Zealand tour on social media before the final announcement, triggering a crisis among PCB’s sycophantic journalists. Salman Ali Agha was rushed to meet the PCB Chairman at 7:30 PM on a Sunday, a late-hour panic move to salvage the situation. Shadab Khan, excluded from central contracts, ignored for key tours, and devoid of form (zero wickets in five of his last ten games to add to having not bowled in 4 matches in the last 14 and having only 3 wickets in 10 matches), was suddenly anointed vice-captain.

Earlier reports elucidated that he had been handpicked to captain the Pakistan T20 International team to New Zealand, nonetheless, the decision could have repercussions, they included him as deputy to Salman Ali Agha, who is completely alien to T20 cricket. Agha, on experimental basis, had been sent to Zimbabwe as captain and in six T20 Internationals could only muster 52 runs at 10.00 with a strike rate of 79.40. His career T20 strike rate is 114.90 and averages 18.90 in all matches. Primarily, he is an astounding One Day and red-ball batsman.  Aaqib Javed, the self-proclaimed architect of Pakistan’s revival, was now defending the indefensible with hollow rhetoric.

An Illusion of Progress, a Reality of Mediocrity

While world cricket moves towards data-driven processes, multi-disciplinary approaches, role defined, supreme fitness dependent strategic foresight, Pakistan lingers in the dark ages of bureaucratic egoism and baseless decision-making.

Aaqib Javed was to be brought in for High-Performance Centre development, then made selector, then made convener, then usurping Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie’s authority had engineered Pakistan’s downward spiral. He conspired his way to the top, then spent his tenure defending failure, as alleged by Jason Gillespie once Pakistan’s red ball Head Coach. Aaqib created mud pitches to win Test matches against England, only for Pakistan to be embarrassed by a lowly West Indies team on the same surfaces. His selections defied logic. His process defied reason. His Pakistan team defies belief.

What remains is a broken system, an administration fuelled by politics rather than performance, and a cricket team shackled by the egos of those who should be its custodians, not its executioners. This is not just an indictment of Aaqib Javed. This is an indictment of an entire structure that allows mediocrity to thrive, excellence to be discarded, and the national cause to be sacrificed at the altar of personal vendettas.

Pakistan cricket stands at a precipice, not because of a lack of talent, but because it is run by men who mistake conspiracy for competence and chaos for strategy. They have already become irrelevant, in case they don’t adopt the modern infrastructure and fail to incorporate all the tools in their pathway, and senior cricket, the game will die in Pakistan. It’s about time, they understand they require professionals to run the PCB, and not the unrelated political appointments.

Couple of years ago, Pakistan’s domestic cricket produced a player or two of international standards, comparable to the rest of the world, based on skills, flair, and flamboyance, though unpredictable still they could pull off a win or two. Nonetheless, with scientific interventions, process-driven structured development of players had left Pakistan irrelevant. Even the quality of stock produced isn’t at par with the required high international standards.

PCB needs to start it all and now. There is no time left. We can’t reinforce failures. Until PCB and Pakistan do not get to the fully developed multi-disciplinary infrastructure, at least, some reasonable HR to start the process. Let’s begin with selection, which currently has marred the dynamics and balance of the Pakistan team. Specific data must be assessed for smarter white-ball selection.

Only then will Pakistan escape the cycle of reactive chaos and personal bias, stepping into a new era of calculated, forward-thinking team-building.

Modern cricket no longer bends to the whims of intuition or the mercurial eye of a selector watching from a balcony. It is a science now, a slow, deliberate assembly of processes layered atop one another, a pathway mapped from tender adolescence to the unforgiving glare of the international stage. There is no room left for accidents, no space for chance to crown the worthy. The journey of a player must now pass through corridors lined with data, tested against the calibrations of biomechanical scrutiny, mental conditioning, and physiological mapping.

Age-group cricket is no longer a proving ground of raw talent alone, but a laboratory where skill, temperament, and physical resilience are measured, refined, and re-measured, a slow burn leading to the scope of national selection. Continuity, not coincidence, shapes the modern cricketer. The machinery of modern cricket management is not populated by romantics or high priests of instinct.

It is staffed by role-specific professionals, supra-specialists in fields that were once considered peripheral, now central. Analysts, sports scientists, psychologists, physiotherapists, data architects, all choreographing a player’s rise like unseen hands nudging a fragile domino path. What was once the game’s soul, natural flair, the irrepressible stroke of genius is now but an entry point, a basic prerequisite to stand at the door.

Beyond it lies the real test: durability of body and mind, the forecasting of vulnerability, the layering of multi-dimensional techniques, the painstaking repetition of movements until they settle into muscle memory, no longer choice but instinct. Talent has been unseated by process; intuition by predictive modelling.

Modern cricket does not respond to desire alone. It demands diligence, precise prioritisation, and the unerring execution of intent. No longer can a cricketer be built through shortcuts, nor through the sermons of ex-superstars whose brilliance was forged in a different, freer age. Without the scaffolding of cutting-edge infrastructure, tools that measure, dissect, forecast, even the most gifted player is left exposed to the ruthlessness of elite sport.

For Pakistan cricket, long adrift in nostalgia and myth-making, this is no longer an inconvenient truth but an existential necessity. The world has moved, systems have evolved, and the game has become a living industry, run not by committee-men clinging to memories, but by professionals versed in the depths & evidence of data and development.

Suppose Pakistan cricket wishes to escape the sinking swamp of mediocrity. In that case, it must commit itself to a comprehensive reconstruction, one that acknowledges cricket not only as a sport, but as a science, an economy, and a cultural institution demanding expertise, not sentiment, at its helm. The world has left us behind. It is time to decide if we wish to catch up or simply become a cautionary tale, a story others tell to remind themselves of the cost of inertia.

ثود شکیل اور عثمان خان، دونوں سینٹرل کنٹریکٹ سے جڑے ہوئے مردہ جائیداد کے بے خیال وارثوں کی طرح، ماہوں تک محیط سے دیکھتے رہے، اٹل، اچھوت، اناپیکھ جیسے پاکستان نے زمبابوے، آسٹریلیا، اور جنوبی افریقہ کا دورہ کیا اور ان کی طرف تھوڑی سی نظر بھی نہیں ڈالی۔ وہ پاکستانی سلیکٹروں کے پسندیدہ اتنے خاص لمبو میں موجود تھے، ون ڈے انٹرنیشنلز میں نہ تو مسترد کیے گئے نہ ہی چاہے گئے، فہرست میں ایک نام بجائے حرکت میں منصوبہ۔ اور پھر، بغیر کسی وجہ کے، انہیں بلایا گیا، ایک ایسی ٹیم میں پیراشوٹ کیا گیا جس میں وہ کبھی بھی نہیں رہنے تھے۔
